Examines TQM management methods and contrasts them withtraditional methods in U.S. industry today. Participatory andauthoritarian management approaches are reviewed. Case studies ofsuccessful applications are examined (e.g., FedEx, 3M, Dell) along withTQM attempts that have been unsuccessful.

Stresses the value of strategic planning and teambaseddecision making, and focuses on how Fortune 100 companieshave changed their goals, objectives, strategies and tactics in order toface global competition.

Students will develop an awareness of the historical events inoccupational safety and health that led to the current regulatoryprocess. They will identify health and safety concerns in previous jobs and present a proposal to correct the situation(s). The proposalwill identify the hazard, methods to measure and contain the risk orhazard, and discuss cost of implementing the proposal and the cost ofinjury and illness to workers.

Examines project control and the economics of accident prevention,methods of recognition/avoidance/prevention of unsafe workingconditions, using reference material and advisory sources,construction site security and traffic control, project schedulingto prevent losses, hazard analysis, selection of safety methodsand equipment, safety and loss prevention documentation, safetyinspection and maintenance records, OSHA (Occupational Safety andHealth Act) laws and regulations that apply.

Review of the ISO 14000 series of standards which are beingdeveloped by the International Organization for Standardization(ISO). Topics will include background and scope of ISO 14000 andits subparts, business implications, the economic and market benefits,ISO registration and auditing standards, domestic and internationalimplications.

Allows students to develop a proactive hazardous waste managementplan, which emphasizes waste minimization and reduction strategies.Topics include: pollution concepts, process evaluation and planning,impact assessments, waste reduction, inventory controls, and training.

Specific focus may vary from semester to semester andmay include: Lean Manufacturing, Supply Chain Management, Ethicsin Science and Technology, Organizational Change Management,Leadership, etc. May be repeated for credit, but students may study asingle topic only once for credit.

Examines the fundamentals of production such as analysis, planningand control, organization of production, forecasting and masterproduction schedules, procurement, stock of production, stockcontrol, routing, scheduling and dispatching, and quantitativemethods.

Topics include: job safety analysis, plant inspection, accidentinvestigation, safety education, and training. Special emphasis isplaced on an introduction to the OSHA program and its application toindustry.
