Fulfills a course requirement in the American Studies Core ConcentrationAn examination of movies and the process of moviegoing in Americanlife historically and in the present. This course will consider theway the United States has been and is currently being portrayed, toAmericans as well as those outside the country, on film. A variety ofgenres will be considered as we endeavor to understand the way ourculture is portrayed and the significance of this portrayal in Americanhistory and its impact on contemporary life and culture.

Focuses on the various viewsof human nature that organize social practices and the resultingdifferences in adult male/female relationships and in the assignmentof temperament, activities, functions, status, and power.

There will be an historical componentof the course as we consider how the current array of ethnic culturesin the U.S. developed, but the majority of the course will be focusedon contemporary ethnic cultures in America as well as the collectiveimpact of "the ethnic" on Americans and American culture in general.

Fulfills a requirement for the major, minor, or core concentrationPrerequisite: AMST 100, AMST 201, and Senior standing or consent ofthe instructor.In this course, students will prepare to complete their program inAmerican Studies through a) revisiting their coursework in theprogram, as well as any other coursework they choose to include,in order to synthesize the interdisciplinary connections across theirundergraduate program, and b) read and analyze advanced commonreadings to provide further context and breadth of understanding ofthe field and their work in it. Students will demonstrate their masteryin both written and oral form.

Prerequisite: Successful completion (C or higher) of AMST 420Students will complete an original research project on a topic of theirchoosing (in consultation with the instructor). Completion of thissignificant piece of scholarship will reflect the student's mastery andunderstanding of American Studies as a field and will contribute newinsight into the nature of American life and culture. Students will berequired to present and defend their final project at a senior showcase.
