This course examines the history, traditions, philosophy and ethicaldilemmas underlying the courts in the United States justice system.Students will be introduced to: the origins and developments of theUnited States courts; the issues of subject matter and geographicjurisdiction of the state and federal courts, the dynamics of thecourthouse workgroups consisting of attorneys, judges, and litigants;and the processes related to the prosecution of criminal and civil casesin federal and state courts.

Analyzes the functional divisions of a modern police operation in its application to the public safety needs of thecommunity, consideration of alternative and comparative models oflaw enforcement organization.

Prerequisite: CJS 330Problems in developing correctional programs within the institutionand in the community. Topics include prisons and prisoners; old andnew prison designs; the emerging rights of prisoners; the developmentof community corrections as a new expression of the community'sconcern for the incarcerated; and specialized kinds of programs forpersons who are in need of supportive services while their freedom ofmovement is denied.

Prerequisite: CJS 330Addresses the origins, features, and problems associated withprobation and parole as background to the presentation ofmodel programs. Topics include investigation and classificationof participants; community protection rehabilitation; rules ofsupervision; and the benefits and drawbacks of these systems;intermediate interdiction programs, including intensive supervision,electronic monitoring, community service systems, and shockincarceration projects.

Prerequisites: Psych 100 and CJS 105The application of social science research methods and psychologicalknowledge to contemporary issues in the criminal justice system.Topics include: eyewitness memory, scientific jury selection, policeidentification procedures, jury decision making, credibility of witnesstestimony, the social scientist as an expert witness, and researchmethods used by legal psychologists.

Prerequisites: CJS 105, CJS 308A detailed study of crime and justice as it pertains to the femaleoffender. Examines the variations and patterns in female criminality,women's victimization, and women's experiences in the criminaljustice system as victims, offenders and employees, and theoreticalinterpretations of female criminality.
