Prerequisites: Prior departmental approval of a research proposal, 3.3 GPA,and CHEM 450This course serves as a capstone experience for outstanding studentsmajoring in chemistry. Working closely with a faculty mentor,students engage in original research on a topic of their choice. Theresearch may involve laboratory experiments, field work, or computersimulations. This course provides experience in designing andconducting experiments, critically analyzing data, reviewing publishedscientific literature, and communicating scientific information. Theculmination of the course is a formal written thesis and a public oralpresentation.

Fulfills a course requirement in the Chinese Core ConcentrationPrerequisite: Not open to native speakers of MandarinThis is the first course of a two semester sequence in the first yearmodern Standard Chinese (Mandarin) for students who have noprevious exposure to the Chinese language. Students are introduced tothe sounds of Mandarin, basic grammar, vocabulary, and the Chinesewriting system. By the end of the first semester, students are expectedto be able to conduct basic conversations, read simple texts orconversations, and write simple sentences in Chinese.

Students are introduced to the soundsof Mandarin, basic grammar, vocabulary, and the Chinese writingsystem. By the end of the second semester, students will havecompleted training in basic conversation skills, writing and reading,and they will be able to conduct simple conversations on a widevariety of topics in Chinese.

In the course, students will build apersonal computer, install networking components, and learn aboutbasic networking and connectivity. In addition, students will installtwo different operating systems in their computer and a variety ofother utility and application software. An additional supply fee will beassessed for this course.

Introduces students to the elements of business conducted via theWeb, which is the paradigm of 21st century business transactions.Focused on the development of a database in Access and the designand deployment of a Web site, this course integrates the informationmanagement and communications aspects of the digital businessenvironment.
