Marine biology is the application of basic biological principles (e.g., cellbiology, physiology, biomechanics, biodiversity, behavior, ecology, etc.)to marine organisms and their environments. This course will introducemarine ecosystems with emphasis on the physiological adaptations, body types and behavioral strategies of resident species. Patterns ofdiversity will be examined taxonomically and geographically, andbiological interactions will be considered in relation to many differentspecies, including our own.

Fulfills a course requirement in the Biology Core ConcentrationPrerequisites: BIO 103 and BIO 104 or NATSC 103, or consent of instructorSurvey course investigating systematic, evolutionary, and functionaldevelopment of plants. In all categories the focus is on the interrelationshipof the plant kingdom and its environment.
  • 4.00 Credits

Prerequisites: BIO 103 and BIO 104, or consent of instructorThis course is the first of a two-semester course sequence inhuman anatomy and physiology. Over the course of this semesterwe will explore and study the anatomy and functioning of theintegumentary, skeletal, digestive, muscular and nervous systems ofthe human body. Laboratory work includes vertebrate dissections, and investigation of physiological processes in humans and othervertebrates.

Prerequisite: BIO 215 or consent of instructorThis course is the second of a two-semester course sequence in humananatomy and physiology. Over the course of this semester we willexplore and study the anatomy and functioning of the sensory organs, endocrine, cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary and reproductivesystems of the human body. Laboratory work includes vertebratedissections, and investigation of physiological processes in humansand other vertebrates.

Fulfills a course requirement for the Bioethics CertificateThis course does not fulfill a course requirement in the Biology major, minor or core concentration.Prerequisites: BIO 103 or CORE 101 or consent of instructorThe ethical, legal and social implications of recent advancesin biological research, environmental issues and technological applications generate discussions between scientists, politicians, lawyers, clergy and citizens throughout the world. Bioethics isa comprehensive interdisciplinary course about biomedical andenvironmental legal and ethical practice. Students will discussthe conflicts what arise in society that biologists/biotechnologistsface when working in biotechnology, human and animal health, environmental health and ethical research practices in basic/appliedscience. Through critical thinking and "real case" scenarios studentswill be able to reach an appropriate course of action to understand andresolve bioethical concerns in society.

Cross-listed with MATH 250Fulfills the statistics requirement for the Biology, Marine Biology andEnvironmental Science MajorsPrerequisites: MATH 136, BIO 104 and sophomore standing or consentof instructorThe course is a team-taught introductory course in statistics withapplications to biological problems. Students will learn statisticalconcepts and the technical details behind those concepts as well aswhen and how to apply particular procedures. This class is a mixof theoretical understanding of statistical principles and problemapplication using statistical software. Particular topics include thefollowing: Measures of the central tendency and of dispersion andvariability, hypothesis testing, Analysis of Variance and linear, multipleand polynomial regression.
