This course will include a study of the director'srole in the modern theatre and will include student direction of shortscenes.

Fulfills a course requirement in the Theatre Core ConcentrationPrerequisite: Successful completion of a directing class, directingexperience, or consent of instructorStudy of specific problems of play direction as seen in the currentproductions in the London theatres. Analyzes each production toidentify directing problems and possible solutions. Class attendanceat the productions and guest lectures by British directors, wheneverpossible, supplements the study.

Fulfills a course requirement in the Theatre Core ConcentrationA study of selected ideas of theater from Aristotle to the present.Readings include Aristotle, Brecht, Artaud, Stanislavski, Craig, andGrotowski. A seminar course for upperclassmen in theatre andothers by permission. Includes discussion, research papers, andclassroom presentations. Greatest emphasis is placed on theorists andpractitioners of the 20th century.

Dramaticliterature for children will also be surveyed. Students will test theirtheories and the range of their skills by creating productions foroutreach in community schools.

Fulfills a course requirement in the Theatre Core ConcentrationAccompanied by lectures in English history, art, and mores, the bulk ofthe course is an on-the-street workshop exploring British culture. Includesindividual visits to many important museums and galleries, and tours ofLondon, Greenwich, Windsor, Hampton Court, St. Albans (Verulamium),Shaw's Corner, Canterbury, and Stratford-upon-Avon. Required of allparticipating students.

Fulfills a course requirement in the Visual Arts Studies: Painting/ Drawing/Printmaking, or Sculpture Core ConcentrationUsing various drawing materials, basic drawing methods will beintroduced including composition, the effective use of positiveand negative space, the relationship of image to page, methods ofcontrolling spatial illusion, and various means to creating images.

The Intersections program is a series of seminars mandatory toall Visual Arts Majors throughout their tenure at Roger WilliamsUniversity. Held weekly each semester, the program is intended tocreate a forum for discussion amongst students and faculty. Roundtableconversations or presentations by students, faculty and guestartists generate active and lively discussions surrounding issues inthe arts. A student mentor program, intended to build a sense ofcommunity among the visual arts students is a vital component of thisprogram. Required readings or screenings and topics covered will varysemester to semester.

Prerequisite: VARTS 101 or permission of instructorFulfills a course requirement in the Visual Arts Studies: Painting/ Drawing/Printmaking Core Concentration.This course continues to investigate the visual possibilities introducedin Foundations of Drawing. The student explores the visual impact andsignificance of the figure as a central subject of drawing. Inherent inthis exploration is an understanding of its anatomical and expressivecomplexities.
