The aim ofthe work is to extend the creative range of the actor by developinghis or her physical and vocal equipment, releasing the imaginationso that the actor is able to bring a new freedom and a new depthto his or her work, whether in the experimental or the traditionaltheatre.

Each studentsubmits a plan for his or her own course of study, augmented bymuseum visits and research checklists, using the various resourcesavailable in London. Ordinarily, the goal of this study is a major designproject of portfolio quality.

Plays chosen reflect the announced seasons oflocal and nearby London theatre production companies.

Beginningin the late nineteenth century with realism and the anti-realisticrebellion, the course follows the major theories, plays, andpractitioners that shaped our contemporary theatre.

Fulfills a course requirement in the Theatre Core ConcentrationA study of the contemporary performing arts in England throughexposure to a broad range of theatre, dance, and musical events. Thecourse emphasizes the historic development of various performancetraditions. Theatre tours, classroom discussions, guest speakers,reading and writing assignments provide historic context and criticalperspective.

Fulfills a course requirement in the Theatre Core ConcentrationStudy of major traditional dance-drama forms in India, China, andJapan. The course will deal with traditions, texts, and performancepractices for Kathakali, Peking Opera, Noh, Kabuki, and Bunraku intheir traditional and modern manifestations demonstrating parallelsand interactions between Eastern and European performancetraditions.

Fulfills a course requirement in the Theatre Core ConcentrationConcentrated study of major trends in the contemporary theatre. Eachsemester the class will focus on the work of one playwright or one aspectof the current theatre. Students are expected to do extensive researchand analysis for seminar presentations.
