Designed to familiarize students with the basic principles ofepidemiology, enables critical reading of the medical literatureand understanding of the epidemiologic terminology therein.Various contemporary health care issues are examined, includingpharmacoepidemiology, chronic disease epidemiology and socialepidemiology.

Provides a theoretical framework for the critical analysis of currentsocial welfare and health care policies and their effects on theprovision of services. Emphasis is placed on the political/ideologicalforces that shape these policies and on the effectiveness, efficiency,and accountability systems of various approaches to the allocationof resources and the provision of social and health care services.Students will learn how to engage in this critical analysis, includingidentification of how to personally participate in these systems, andhow outcomes of policy directly impact individuals, particularlythose in society who are among the more powerless and vulnerable.

Adhering to requirements for certification for Certified CaseManagers (CCM), focuses on the role of case managers in assessment,planning, coordination, monitoring and evaluation. Particularemphasis is placed on benefit systems, cost benefit analysis, legaland ethical issues pertaining to confidentiality, and legislation whichimpacts case management approaches.

Provides an understanding of the therapeutic models used toassess and work with families. Content of discussions will centeron assigned readings, videotapes, role plays, and special areas ofinterest brought into class. This course will benefit students whohave contact with families in the social and/or health servicesfield.

Investigates the evolution of managed care in the United States healthcare system, particularly focusing on efficiency and effectivenessin this approach to contemporary medical and mental health carepractice. Students will be required to critically examine issues of costcontainment, quality management, and the political context of currentdebates regarding the future of managed care in social and healthservices.

Cross-Listed as CIS 100This course introduces the fundamentals of personal computer(PC) hardware. This hands-on course is taught in a laboratory andexposes the student to technology from a practical perspective. In thecourse, students will build a personal computer, install networkingand operating systems components, learn basic networking, andtesting methodologies. In addition, students will install two differentoperating systems in their computer and learn to use various testingand applications software.
