5.00 Credits
Prerequisite: ARCH 231,313, 325, 335;Pre/Co-requisite: ARCH 322Students may select from a number of thematically focused directedstudios in order to fulfill the Advanced Architectural Design Studiorequirement for the Bachelor of Science and BS + Masters ofArchitecture degree programs. Students completing a Bachelor ofScience are required to take either an Advanced Architectural DesignStudio or an Advanced Topical Design Studio.
-
5.00 Credits
Prerequisite: ARCH 231,313, 325, 335This advanced design studio examines the role of Architecture as acritical component of the larger built environment and of the publicrealm. As such, the projects engaged within this studio focus on issuesand concerns impacting local and/or global communities. This studioalso explores the role of architecture in relation to allied disciplinessuch as Urban Design, Historic Preservation, Planning and LandscapeArchitecture, and in relation to the various formal and informalconstituencies that influence the shape of the urban fabric. Thiscourse is Cross-Listed with Arch 516 Graduate Topical Design Studio:Urban Minimum passing grade of "C" required
-
3.00 Credits
Architecture ElectivePrerequisite: Junior StandingVariable content course dealing with significant aspects and themesin Architecture, in the areas of history/theory of architecture, environmental and behavior; technical systems, and professionalpractices.
-
3.00 Credits
Prerequisites: ARCH 335A numeric and graphical approach to the design and analysis of basicstructural systems. Basic principles of mechanics: forces, equilibrium, geometric properties of areas, material properties, support conditions, stress strain relationships will be presented. The selection andconfiguration of efficient structural systems for common buildingtypes will be emphasized. Projects requiring the design and analysis ofsimple funicular structures will be assigned
-
3.00 Credits
Prerequisites: ARCH 434A qualitative and quantitative analysis of structural materials, structural members, and structural assemblies. Emphasizes thefundamental design principles of wood, steel and concrete structures.Foundation and lateral load resisting systems will be studied. Casestudies of significant architectural structures will be assigned todevelop design and analytical skills, including the use of structuralanalysis software. The integration of the structural system with othersystems within the building and its relationship to the enclosuresystem will be addressed. Advanced structural technologies, such astensile, shell, and high-rise systems will be introduced
-
3.00 Credits
Architecture ElectivePrerequisites: ARCH 313, ARCH 321, and junior standingCo-Listed with ARCH 561Introduces the theoretical underpinnings and design processes oflandscape architecture as a discipline and as a contemporary practice.Modes of interpreting, inventorying, and working with the landscapeand the materials used in landscape construction will be examined.Class lectures, case study research and simple design exerciseswill look at landscape design at multiple scales. The central role oflandscape design as an integral component of sustainable developmentpractices will also be examined
-
3.00 Credits
Architecture ElectivePrerequisite: Junior standingThrough a variety of study and documentation techniques, studentsexamine the architecture and urbanism of the Study Abroad settingas important cultural manifestations of a people and their history.Readings and lectures by University and local faculty providehistorical or theoretical background for students' on-site observations. The current practice of architecture will likewise be illuminated byvisits with local practitioners and tours of their work. Through anappreciation of the range of issues, which can influence architecturaland urban form in the study abroad setting, it is hoped that studentswill be able to reflect more objectively on their own culture, environment and creative processes.
-
3.00 Credits
Architecture ElectivePrerequisite: ARCH 325, junior standingDutch architecture of the 20th century provides a unique groundingfor the study of modern architecture's ideas, development andbuildings. Dutch architecture of the last century may be seenas a laboratory for the examination of a contemporary society'senvironment and social advancement. Topics will explore and examinethe thematic evolution of 20th century architectural ideals in Hollandas expressed by significant architects' writings and buildings. A lectureseminarformat promotes the idea that themes of the past centurycontinue to be advanced in contemporary Dutch architectural theoryand practice.
-
3.00 Credits
Architecture ElectivePrerequisites: ARCH 231, ARCH 331An introduction to the fundamentals of construction estimating andscheduling. Conceptual, square foot, systems and unit price estimateswill be studied along with basic CPM scheduling theory to include barcharts and network schedules
-
3.00 Credits
Architecture ElectivePrerequisites: ARCH 287 and completion of the Architecture Core ProgramThis course will emphasize the development and use of architecturalcomputer models as various phases within the design process, fromconceptual sketches through design realization. Students will learnmodeling, lighting and rendering applications using significantarchitectural and design works as references. A variety of programswill be investigated.
