Special attention will be given to the modern quest for the historical Jesus, to Jesus' teaching methods based on parables and aphorisms and to the various images of Jesus in Medieval and Modern culture. The course will focus on modern literary analysis of the pentateuchal traditions and archaeological discoveries which are helping to clarify the historical and cultural context from which the first five books of the Bible emerged.
