It introduces students to anthropological data gathering methods including ethnoscientific techniques, participant observation, scheduled and open-ended interview, life history, survey, questionnaire, managing and coding field notes, and qualitative analysis. It also discusses various issues involved in presenting ethnographic data. By the end of the course the student will have obtained the knowledge necessary to conduct and report on primary field research. This course is an introduction to the study and appreciation of music in its cultural context. A selection of the many musical styles in the world will be presented through reading, listening to recorded and live examples and demonstrations, and through performing some simplified examples as a group during class. Students will develop listening skills and understanding of music that may be unfamiliar. Students will study different ways in which cultures organize their music and also how musical structures reflect cultural values and other aspects of cultural organization. Previous musical experience is not required.
