3799. Lessons of the Holocaust from the US Holocaust Memorial Museum. The Holocaust weighs heavily on contemporary culture. This course explores how individuals and communities have sought to make sense of that atrocity; the lessons they have drawn from it; and how they have invoked the Holocaust to advance various ideologies and politics. We will learn to analyze how moral arguments are made and to situate them in their historical and intellectual contexts. The course requires a supervised and free visit to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., in addition to coursework. Prereq.: HIST 1500 or HIST 2600. 3 s.h.
