Prerequisites: SUR 110, SUR 111 and BIO 163 Corequisites: SUR 123 and BIO 170 This course provides an introduction to selected basic and intermediate surgical specialties that students are exposed to the fi rst clinical rotation. Emphasis is placed on related surgical anatomy, pathology, and procedures that enhance theoretical knowledge of patient care, instrumentation, supplies, and equipment. Upon completion, students should be able to correlate, integrate, and apply theoretical knowledge of the course topics to the clinical operative environment. Emphasis is placed on the scrub and circulating roles of the surgical technologist including aseptic technique and basic case preparation for selected surgical procedures. Upon completion, students should be able to prepare, assist with, and dismantle basic surgical cases in both the scrub and circulating roles. (Sp.) Topics include principles of reproduction, growth development, species characteristics, establishment and maintenance of golf courses and sports fi elds, and lawn applications. Upon completion, students should be able to identify turfgrass species through characteristics and reproductive stages and develop an establishment and maintenance plan for high quality turf areas. Topics include small engine use and repair; operation, maintenance, and repair of turfgrass management equipment; organization of shop areas; and safety considerations. Topics include natural grass croquet courts and baseball, soccer, and football fi elds. Prerequisite: None Corequisite: None This course covers detection and identifi cation of turfgrass pests with emphasis on methods of control or eradication. Topics include weeds, insects, diseases, and nematodes identifi cation with an understanding of pesticides used, application procedures, and costs involved in control programs. Upon completion, students should be able to identify turfgrass pests, select the proper pesticide, develop pest control programs, and/or use integrated pest management. (Sp.)
