Emphasis is placed on historical and cultural context, themes, literary traditions, and backgrounds of the authors. Upon completion, students should be able to interpret, analyze, and respond to selected texts. This course has been designated as writing-intensive. This course has been approved to satisfy the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement for tranferability as a premajor and/or elective course requirement. Topics include human and organizational behaviors, long term disaster impact on communities, disaster warning, and evacuation considerations. Topics include Federal, State, and local roles and responsibilities in major disaster recovery work with an emphasis on governmental coordination. Upon completion, students should be able to implement a disaster plan and assess the needs of those involved in a major disaster. (F.)

Topics include the history of terrorism, scene hazards, evidence preservation, risk assessment, roles and responsibilities, explosive recognition, and terrorism planning. Upon completion, students should be able to recognize the threat of terrorism and operate within the emergency management framework at a terrorism incident. (Sp.)

    Prerequisite: FIP 236 Corequisite: None This course provides students with the knowledge and skills to effectively manage and operate an EOC during crisis situations. Topics include properly locating and designing an EOC, staffi ng, training and briefi ng EOC personnel, and how to operate an EOC. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate how to set up and operate an effective emergency operations center. (Sp.)

    Prerequisite: None Corequisite: None This course covers procedures for determining the origin and cause of accidental and incendiary fi res. Topics include collection and preservation of evidence, detection and determinationof accelerants, courtroom procedure and testimony, and documentation of the fi re scene. Upon completion, students should be able to conduct a competent fi re investigation and present those fi ndings to appropriate offi cials or equivalent, meeting NFPA 1021.     Prerequisite: None Corequisite: None This course is designed to increase fi rst responder awareness of the type, nature, physiological effects of, and defensive techniques for mitigation of HazMat incidents. Topics include recognition, identifi cation, regulations and standards, zoning, resource usage, defensive operations, and other related topics. Upon completion, students should be able to recognize and identify the presence of hazardous materials and use proper defensive techniques for incident mitigation. (Su.)

Topics include organizing for emergency management, coordinating for community resources, public sector liability, and the roles of government agencies at all levels. Topics include principles of public relations, press releases, press conferences, public information offi cers, image surveys, and the effects of perceived service on fi re protection delivery.
