6.00 Credits
While visiting Florence, Venice and Rome, students will be drawing and attending lectures for six hours a day, five days a week. For example, in Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in Venice, there is a Titan Assumption that, when seen from a certain distance, is designed to repeat shapes found in the architecture of the church in order to strengthen the illusion of figures rising in space. All of the tone and color is meant to be seen in the half light of a time with no electricity, and rendered light on the figures is meant to appear as if caused by light streaming through the windows of the church. Through a set of lectures and by doing a set of drawings, which study the painting relative to its setting, students will develop much insight into the language of drawing and its expressive possibilities. The concentrated power of the work in the venue planned for the course is an experience impossible to duplicate any other way.

While on site in Mexico, students will be drawing every day while also viewing outstanding examples of sketchbook drawing through slides or gallery visits. Three 3-hour evening critiques will be used to encourage reflection and experimentation. The trip part of this class will occur over a period of eight days in Mexico City during which time students will visit a vast variety of sites and drawing locales. There will be daily individual critiques and dialogue. After returning to Moore, students will meet for five 6-hour studio classes in order to develop in other formats and possibly other media more sustained and complex drawings based on the original sketchbook discoveries.
