    This is an elective open to all upper level students. The course will incorporate elements of collage, pattern and texture into the student's vocabulary of art-making skills. Students will be encouraged to use a wide range of traditional and non-traditional art materials and will learn many different collage techniques through classroom demonstrations. A comprehensive historical overview of collage will be given through a series of lectures and presentations. Students will keep a collaged journal/sketchbook as a tool for self-discovery, exploration of materials and to document their creative process. Class projects will revolve around topical contemporary issues such as those of identity, gender and place. Studio Elective

    This course explores the sculptural and design potential for low-tech off-loom processes. It introduces students to a wide range of non-traditional material as well as the work of numerous contemporary artists who utilize similar materials. The techniques include eastern and western papermaking, coiling, felting, plaiting, netting, knotting, and crochet. Concept development in dialogue with materials and techniques are stressed. Satisfies: Major Requirement or Studio Elective

    This course introduces the skills necessary to weave on a floor loom, including winding warps, dressing the loom, and weaving techniques such as tapestry rug and basic weaves. In addition, issues of materials and color in woven applications are discussed. Basic design skills necessary to developing a woven image or functional fabric are stressed.     In this year-long course students will learn the vocabulary, tools, techniques and applications of print design for apparel and home furnishings. A recognition and development of technical skills necessary for proficient work in the industry, stressing experimentation and personal expression is developed throughout the year. There is a strong emphasis on drawing, making keen observations of form, growth, color and pattern in nature and environment. The course includes work in pencil, ink, watercolor, block printing, dyes, and gouache. Satisfies: Major Requirement or Studio Elective

    This course is planned to prepare students for an employment search for the Internship experience. The skills attained will assist with any professional job search. Internship takes place in the summer between the junior and senior years. The 240 hour, six week experience may take place in a broad range of situations from print design studios, woven design studios, craftsmen apprenticeships, museum textile collections, and textile showrooms. The course prepares the student to write her resume, compose cover letters, prepare her portfolio, and conduct a job search. Guest speakers and guests from the field will acquaint students with career possibilities and professional expectations.

    This course adds Adobe Illustrator to the student's knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, allowing the development of fabrications for individual projects. Flat sketches are rendered on the computer for use with final presentations. A final project highlights the student's computer skills. Satisfies: FD and TD major requirement

    This advanced course in Digital Print Design is to expand on the knowledge of the computer as a creative design tool for textile design and fashion design students. The emphasis will be on the student developing an individual project in digital print design for either the apparel or homefurnishing markets. Students will utilize original hand drawn images, painted images, as well as photographic images which will be scanned and manipulated to create textile designs, coordinates and color ways. Student work will reflect current trends in the marketplace. Creativity and professional portfolio skills will be emphasized.
