    The candidate will select an undergraduate course from a roster of approved courses and then assist the faculty teaching this course throughout the semester. The candidate must be available and attend all class meetings and final critiques for the undergraduate course. As part of the Graduate Teaching Assistantship, the candidates are required to participate in the Teaching Preparation Seminar. This seminar will cover methodologies and philosophy of teaching, how to build course curricula with clear measurable learning goals, how to prepare syllabi and lesson plans, classroom management, and how to utilize technology as a teaching tool.

    The many varied issues of sustainability will be examined in their broadest aspects, from macro environmental contexts to the concerns of commonplace functional minutia. While focus will be given to the designer's role in sustainability, impact on the broader geographic, social and human realities will also be examined. Preparation for LEED certification is an additional course goal.

    Beyond the basics of digital drawing (Autocad, GRID 603) and presentation techniques using digitally enhanced perspective sketches (Photoshop, GRID 645), an array of additional software for client and public presentations will be introduced, including photo realistic rendering, and spatial walk-thru methods, as well as audio incorporation and long distance imaging.

    The candidate designs an innovative solution to an essential question developed in Directed Research that demonstrates sophisticated problem solving, advanced research and inquiry, and command of theories, principles and techniques. At the conclusion of the course, the candidate will present their thesis to a panel of design faculty and experts. The culminating event includes an exhibition of the thesis process, research and project created in studio.

    A disciplined study of figurative construction through analytical perceptual drawing. Students work from animal and human skeletons, plaster casts, wooden manikins and the life model. Lectures and projects focus on artistic anatomy, linear perspective as it relates to figurative construction, compositional analyses of masterwork figurative illustrations and strategies used in illustrative and narrative figure drawing. The instruction follows a concept of systematic progression from modeled line drawings through tonal studies. As requisite skills are acquired, the student builds toward more challenging assignments. The instruction emphasizes the relevant drawing and painting approaches necessary for the graphic translation of an idea. The systematic process of critically evaluating your own work is introduced to better prepare the student for the successful interaction of one's illustrative pictures with their target audience. The course work emphasizes the practical application of typography for the illustrator. Exercises range from semantics to basic page layout using a grid, critical comparisons, classical versus modern forms and creating typefaces when needed. The preparation and design of self-promotion materials is included. When appropriate and sequential within the context of the course, crossover illustration and typography projects are assigned. Satisfies: Major Requirement
