This course will focus on the poster as a venue for large and small scale multiples intended to reach a vast audience. Included in the course will be a review of the history, function and the aesthetics qualities of the poster along with the considerations of projecting a clear message to the intended audience. Projects will be done by a number of processes including letterpress printmaking, copy machine and larger format digital printing. Both Photography and Digital Photography skills will be important to know although illustration can also be chosen as the means of image making. Satisfies studio elective credits; Recommended for Juniors and Seniors.

The elements necessary for designing a great package are covered: form, image, function, material and simple engineering. Projects will include both practical and experimental approaches, along with consideration of ecological impact of packaging in the environment. Building on Book, Box, Portfolio, this course explores more complex book structures. Students will learn historical binding methods, including: hard cover codex, tunnel book, long stitch books, and various contemporary bindings. The course will also be an examination of contemporary responses to the traditional book.

Covers the myriad skills necessary for securing and fulfilling a required internship including resume writing, job searching, interviewing and portfolio arrangement. Field trips and guest lectures from design support professionals including photographers, artists' reps, printers, paper suppliers and service bureaus introduces students to the variety of vendors that interface daily with graphic design professionals.Satisfies: Major Requirement

This class enables the student to create an independent time based project in Macromedia Flash that might include: promotional work, character study, educational exercises or other exploratory work. Some understanding of Photoshop or multimedia would be useful but not necessary.

Introduces students to issues in the design and communication of information. Issues raised in the categories of cartography, statistics, diagrams, and wayfinding and environmental graphics will be investigated and explored through studies of scale, experience, legibility, understandability, appropriateness, and human factors. The purpose of this course is to elevate the significance of image making as a vehicle of expression and as an integral part of visual communication. Students will experiment with meaningful interpretations of form, visual languages and the inherent, expressive quality of various media.
