    A comprehensive basic painting course with an emphasis on realism - the depiction of representational subject matter. Based on old and modern master paintings and illustrations, students will learn reliable painting techniques to create modern realistic imagery. Methods of paint application from painterly to smooth and highly polished will be demonstrated. Topics include color theory, artists' materials and supports. Developing good working habits, combined with solid technical skills will be emphasized as well as developing a personal style. Working in an inspiring, friendly atmosphere, students will acquire a strong foundation in painting and a confident sense of purpose. Ideal for beginning painters. Intermediate and advanced painters are welcome.

    Using the natural world as inspiration, gain skills in realistic rendering thgourgh exploring techniques for depicting an object's form, structure, texture and pattern. Demonstrations and hands-on exercises encourage experimentation with colored pencil, watercolor and acrylic. Projects include learning how to choose, mix and apply color and how to exploit lighting to heighten the realistic qualities of such objects as plants, birds and animals. Students will increase their sensory awareness, confidence in basic artmaking skills and understanding of composition in order to create more complex and expressive works of art.

    In a program design for art teachers and those who integrate art into other disciplines, participants explore how art influences change within individuals and groups. Distinguished professionals lead panel discussions, studio workshops and field trips. Special opportunties at Spiral Q Puppet Theatre, the Philadelphia Museum of Art amd site-specific installations look at how multi-sensory encounters expand their reality and contribute to empowerment, meaning making and identity. Studio workshops involve creating art while generating ideas and exemplars for classroom use. Projects are appropriate for beginner through advanced levels.

The institute will enrich and nourish your teaching and practice of the performing and visual arts through an intensive curriculum and unique residential experience.

    This course is designed to explore the formal, aesthetic and expressive possibilities in the interaction of traditional two and three dimensional materials, that will maximize the student's ability to express her ideas. This will be achieved through a rich dialogue of formal material and conceptual experience. Mixed media is used to make students aware of the possibilities of expanding studio practice and expressive vocabulary. Students are exposed to the principles of mixed media and begin to have an understanding of a specific visual expressive language, as demonstrated through class discussion and presentation. History culture materials and methods will be discussed as it relates to being used as a means of expression and understanding.     This course, required of all 2D and 3D senior Fine Arts majors, provide the student with essential transitional skill needed for the independent work of their Senior Thesis and the studio life of the practicing fine artist. The course presents contemporary issues and concepts for understanding post-modernism and art criticism, defining one's role in the art arena; establishing aesthetic, social political, and practical goals; and preparing for the senior thesis project. Course work will involve reading assignments, written art criticism, class discussions, guest speaker, field trips to artists studios, slide lectures, and other appropriate slides presenting your work; hanging a show; and writing for grant proposals and exhibition opportunities will also covered.     Fine arts majors who meet the requirements for an independent study may elect to work in a job of educational value to her major, such as an artists studio, museum gallery, arts organization or arts related commercial enterprise. The position is selected in consultation with the Director of the career center and sponsoring faculty member. Guidelines for these internships are available at the Locks Career Center for women in the arts. Satisfies: Studio Elective
