The "mood" and "personality" of an interior space is often expressed through the use of textiles. What textiles are chosen and how they are applied are often what separates a commercial space from a residential one, an amateur from a professional: at the window, across the furniture, on the floors and so on. The challenge is "where does a designer begin?" This class will take a fresh look at what it means to work intelligently and creatively with textiles in today's expansive global market. Students will have the opportunity to study fabric design and patterning from its conception to its final product: investigating classic motifs and the cultures that created them, how a pattern comes together (repeats and various printing methods) and analyzing what fabrics and combinations work best on specific furnishings. Simple drawings, collages and design boards of textiles for interiors will be created, as well as a field trip to a fabric design studio or exhibition.
