Develop strong observational skills and learn about composition and proportion through interpreting the human figure, the traditional prerequisite to all visual disciplines. Through a series of creative exercises, you will investigate new ways of seeing and drawing the figure using a variety of drawing media. The live model allows for the study of gesture as well as skeletal and anatomical structure. Students will learn how to capture a pose with quick gestures, develop a quality of line with contours and solve foreshortening problems by understanding aspects of perspective. Short drills will lead to long poses and the development of more complete, detailed drawings. Drawing experience recommended but not required.

Designed for the novice sewer, this course introduces basic sewing skills the beginner needs to create a simple garment. Emphasis is placed on machine and hand sewing techniques and understanding the sequence of producing a garment. Learn to sew simple seams, hems, pockets, facings, and closings.

Originally meaning "fine sewing," Couture today is synonymous with high fashion designed with luxury fabrics and exquisite detailing. Made in limited numbers, Couture garments are valued in the thousands of dollars. In this class students discuss what makes a collection Haute Couture and choose an Haute Couture designer to study and investigate. Students also create original Haute Couture designs, color stories, textile stories, and presentation boards.

Focus on product development for a target market and build research and development skills. Explore fashion drawing and design principles, as well as new fashion terminology.

An introduction to the construction of, and the order in which garments are made - key to understanding the concept of technical design and its impact on retail pricing. Attention to design details will help prepare students for the exactness of technical drawing. Within the class, students' sewing skills will advance. A sloper will be used in the creation of new designs. Those with no prior sewing experieince would benefit by taking Sewing I beforehand.

Learn to use the digitizer to enter and grade patterns on the computer. Exercises that address learning dart manipulation, slashing and spreading will also be provided. Final patterns will incoporate the use of a plotter and be printed. The Lectra/Modaris system of computer patternmaking will be taught in a PC computer lab. Prerequisite: Construction and Flat Patternmaking

Learn to draw freehand from dress forms and models and benefit from a template to deliberately draw garments in proportion. Attend to design details and render and measure design specs consistent with fashion industry standards. From knowledge gained in Construction and Flat Patternmaking, students will learn to draw flats and be introduced to machine knitting. Prerequisite: Construction and Flat Patternmaking

Learn to research and develop design concepts, derived from your design and specs, for a specific targeted market. Fashion trends developed by head designers and the use of and assortment of fabrics are introduced. Incorporating templates of fashion figures, chart a well-merchandised assemblage, inclduing concept boards, with original designs and fabric swatches.
