3.00 Credits
Students will execute drawings from direct observation of the model to develop their perception of form and anatomy. They will also develop an expressive use of drawing materials in response to the figure. The human figure will be studied as both a single compositional unit on the page, as well as a form within the environment. Students will advance through the different levels of the class by increased challenges to their technical skills, awareness of materials, and the sophistication of their ideas regarding the expressive content of the figure. Both wet and dry media will be used, and a variety of approaches will be encouraged. Satisfies: Studio Elective
-
3.00 Credits
This course further develops the skills and concepts of the formal elements of drawing and continues the exploration of individual interests and the formation of a personal drawing language. Students will execute both large and small-scale drawings in a variety of drawing media, based on various thematic problems including the concept of "series." Although the primary source of imagery will be derived from direct observation, other sources for generating ideas and motifs will be introduced. The overall emphasis is on exploration of content, the process of realization, and expanding the use of materials and methods. Introduction to a wide variety of master drawings from all periods will be covered. Satisfies: Major Requirement
-
3.00 Credits
This course explores the possibilities of drawing which are based on conceptual rather than perceptual knowledge. A wide variety of conceptual sources will be introduced, such as variations of spatial components; non-figurative images based on biomorphic or gestural motifs; compositional dynamics; tonal and color explorations; and the variation of mark as an expressive element. A wide variety of experimentation with surfaces, materials, and applications will be encouraged. Emphasis will also be placed on the selection of an idea both in terms of process and materials. The development of abstraction in the 20th century and relevant major artists will be studied and used for reference. Satisfies: Studio Elective

3.00 Credits
This course is designed to extend the possibilities of the use and experimentation of marks on traditional and unorthodox surfaces. The student is to be challenged to use the concepts of Abstract Drawing I toward the development of visual logic. Investigation of diversified media will be explored. Also the addition of color as a viable element will be added; however, the emphasis will be on non-traditional use. Thematic and systemic approaches will be used in conjunction with sustained assignments. Satisfies: Studio Elective

3.00 Credits
This introductory course is designed to instruct the student in the appearance, structure, and function of the skeleton and major muscle groups, with particular emphasis on their relevance to figure drawing and the perception of the life model. Basic proportions and landmarks of the skeletal and muscular structure are studied in their specifics and in their integration as elements of figure drawing. Students will draw from the actual skeleton, as well as from muscle charts and the life model. Satisfies: Studio Elective

3.00 Credits
Advanced Drawing Studio augments the student's grasp of formal and conceptual concerns in drawing, and extends issues of expression by including further exploration and analytic evaluation of the nature of personal content. Students will be expected to structure their own problems, build upon formal and conceptual issues of previous semesters, and produce a serious body of related work. The development of personal imagery and expressive content is stressed. Students will articulate their intentions and develop further critical insight through ongoing class critiques and discussion. Gallery and museum visits and a wide variety ofhistorical and contemporary master drawings will be introduced throughout the semester to enhance the students' context of ideas. Satisfies: Studio Elective
-
3.00 Credits
This course investigates the relationship between drawing, printmaking and painting methods. Students will learn a variety of printmaking techniques that allow for more immediate and spontaneous image-making, such as monotypes which use oil paints, etching inks, and soluble grease pencils. Collagraph, drypoint, and transfer techniques will also be introduced, along with the possibilities for further transforming or working the images through drawing processes. Students will be expected to experiment with a developing imagery and methods of working to suit their expressive needs. At least one large-scale work and a series of smaller works of related thematic content will be required. Historical and contemporary examples of artists using these processes will be presented. Satisfies: Studio Elective

3.00 Credits
Drawing the Figure in Context extends the skills and concepts of Basic Figure Drawing and Basic Drawing into the area of expression. The course is designed to help students develop awareness of the narrative and psychological implications of the formal language of drawing, with an emphasis on the figure. In a wide range of media, students will compose drawings with multiple figures and figure drawings using shallow and deep space, interior and exterior space, using shifting eye levels, various lighting situations and combination of these elements to focus on elements of narrative and feeling.
