This seminar provides advanced students with an opportunity to conduct research on a subject of their choosing related to the specific theme of the course. In addition to reading and discussing secondary scholarship, students will routinely report the results for their research to the seminar and write a substantial seminar paper based primarily on their analysis of primary sources. The course is value-oriented, focusing on the individual's capacity to resist totalitarianism, the role of artists and intellectuals in society, and modern alienation. Each year this course addresses a major topic in African History. The course may examine a particular time period in depth or it may focus on a theme in African history. In this seminar, students will read and discuss historical literature on the chosen topic, and they will write a research paper based on extensive use of primary sources. Guided by a member of the staff, the student writes a thesis in a specialized field. If at the end of the first semester the student's project appears to have honors potential, the student may apply to pursue graduation with honors. Upon satisfactory completion of the essay, the student takes an oral examination on the thesis and its historical field. Prerequisite: Hist 206 [W] Staff

This course provides a general overview of basic medical terminology with an emphasis on the cardiovascular system (1 Credit).

2.00 Credits
Beginning students in health career programs will gain basic entry-level knowledge and skills required for a variety of health occupations. The course includes an introduction to health care systems and agencies, legal, personal and ethical responsibilities, basic medical terminology, the promotion of safety, infection control, vital signs, and CPR. The course includes seven hours of integrated clinical experience per week (2 Credits).

Students considering a career in allied health fields will learn how to develop values, make informed personal decisions, and apply principles in an ethical way based upon theories presented. Students will become familiar with the Code of Ethics followed by various health care organizations. Students will also become familiar with patient confidentiality, the Patient Bill of Rights and patient advocacy (3 Credits).
