Chronologically the course begins with the 1798 rebellion against English rule and then considers the Great Famine of the 1840s, the War of Independence and the partition of Ireland from 1916 to 1922. Other twentieth-century topics include the Troubles in Northern Ireland and Ireland's membership in the European Union. Thematically the course will focus on the nature of Irish nationalism, the effects of the Irish Diaspora at home and abroad, and the transformation of Ireland from an impoverished colony to one of the richest states in the European Union at the start of the twenty-first century.
