An introduction to the methods and materials of printmaking techniques including relief, collograph, drypoint, and computer-generated images for the development of unique multiples. The course will include the use of scanned and electronically altered images as a means for creating intaglio prints. Some knowledge of Photoshop helpful. Materials fee. The art and discipline of traditional and contemporary stained glass. This involves the making of drawings and cartoons, pattern cutting, the cutting of the various glasses to size, subsequent leading or foiling into panels or Tiffany-style lamps, and glazing. Elements of color and design are explored, and progresses from simple to more complex work. Materials fee.

The art of free hand-blown glass. Traditional tools and techniques are used to transform molten glass into utilitarian and decorative objects. Materials fee.

The art of India, Japan, China, and their peripheries. The objective of the course is threefold: to acquaint the Western student with a new artistic language; to examine historically the stylistic changes of Eastern art (Bronze, Sculpture, Calligraphy, Painting); and to interpret art as manifestations of cultural and historical ideas. The objects and architecture of ancient Greece and Rome from the Aegean and Etruscan cultures to very early Christian art, circa 300 A.D. During the first half of the nineteenth century, visual expression was strained between the precision and logic of neoclassicism and the passion and brooding of romanticism. This controversy between styles marked the beginnings of radical changes in the forms and functions of art. Artistic styles emerged prolifically and in rapid succession. Offers an opportunity to explore an area of study not included in the catalogue listing of approved courses. The topic of an Independent Study should be selected and carefully designed by the student and faculty sponsor, and must meet with the approval of the Division Chair. Normally, the student will be expected to have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 and possess the appropriate background and interest to pursue the proposed area of study. A “Proposal for Independent Study” form may be obtained from the Registrar or from theoffice of the Division Chair. Independent Study courses are assigned numbers of 299, 399 or 499, depending on the level of the course.

A sequential continuation from Drawing I, FA201, to further explore the rendering of forms and space within the still life genre with the introduction to methods of rendering the human figure employing the elements of line and value. Emphasis will be given to the understanding and mastering of foreshortening as it applies to the still life and the human figure. Work will be executed in a variety of black and white and colored media including pencil, charcoal, colored pencil, and pastel. Subjects will include still life, clothed model, and nude model environments. Materials fee. Prerequisite: FA201

Further developmental and sequential applications of mastering the methods and materials studied in Drawing I and II. Emphasis will be given to composition development through the study of art history and embedded lectures concerning anatomy and biomechanics. Work executed in class will be of human models, clothed and nude. Materials fee. Prerequisite: FA302.
