An investigation of the fundamentals of design on a two-dimensional surface and within a rectilinear format. Emphasis will be given to the Elements of Art and Principles of Design and will include the study of line, qualities of value, texture, shape/form, space, and color. The concepts of balance, movement, unity/harmony, rhythm/repetition, variety/contrast, emphasis, and proportion will be studied and applied to the compositional arrangement of the elements of art. An investigation of the fundamentals of designing in three dimensions. Emphasis on clay modeling, figure studies and non-figurative exploration of form and space relationships. Materials fee.

Studies the major forms of art—architecture, sculpture, painting and graphic arts, and crafts—interms of their elements, techniques and individual expression. By focusing on the nature of each of these forms separately, we will be able to observe that each form has its own set of rules which apply regardless of the culture or period in which a work was produced. An introduction to the methods of rendering forms and spaces according to the principles of figurative representation. Attention will also be given to methods of rendering tonal values. Students will employ a variety of tools and materials including pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, brush, conté, and pastels. Subjects will usually include still lifes, landscapes and the human figure. Materials fee. Prerequisite: FA101 or permission of instructor.

An introduction to painting with transparent watercolor. Emphasis is placed on rendering forms, objects, and figures in space, along with the methods of doing so. Subjects will include still life, landscape, human figure and some work from photographs. Study and analysis of past and present masters is included. Materials fee.

The introduction to the art and discipline of sumi-e, Oriental Ink Painting, through the study of the four traditional subjects: orchid, bamboo, chrysanthemum and plum. Emphasis will be placed on acquiring skill with specific brush strokes, composition and concentration. Study and analysis of ancient and contemporary masterworks of Oriental painting will be included. For the beginning and continuing students of sumi-e. Materials fee.

Introduction to the techniques of black and white photography, including exposing and developing film, making contact prints and enlargements. Emphasis on technical proficiency and creative potential of the image. A survey of the history of photography is undertaken as well in Photography II. Prerequisite: Manually adjustable 35mm camera. Introduction to wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques, glaze preparation, and the process of firing. Ceramics II includes advanced study of wheel-built and hand-built forms, glaze preparation, and kiln operation. Materials fee.

An introduction to painting in oil paints on panels and stretched canvas. Emphasis will be given to basic color theory, the medium’s individual characteristics as applied to the craft of painting, and methods and techniques concerning the rendering of forms and space according to the principles of observational representation. Work executed in class will consist of the still life genre. Materials fee. Prerequisite: FA201 or permission of instructor.
