The class will meet on a weekly basis as a team throughout the semester in preparation to travel and compete in the spring North California Intercollegiate Climbing Series. Must be able to belay and climb at the 5.8 level to sign up for this course.

Freeriding techniques incorporate “freestyle” skills where the focus is on tricks, jumps, and transitions. Overall course topics include off piste snowboarding, backcountry safety, park riding, goal setting, contest mentality, and injury avoidance. This course is ONLY offered during the summer in Argentina.

This course provides a Level 1 Avalanche Certificate through the American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE). The course describes a framework for decision making and risk management in avalanche terrain. Through both classroom and field instruction, students will be provided with lessons and exercises that are practically oriented, useful, and applicable in the understanding of the various types and characteristics of avalanches, the planning and preparation needed to travel in avalanche terrain, the bonding tests used to determine snow stability and the rescue techniques used in case of an avalanche accident. NOTE: The materials fee provides students with a certificate and a student manual.

This field-based course is designed to provide students with necessary, advanced information to travel safely in wilderness areas. Topics include mountaineering techniques, cross country backpacking, rock climbing skills, snow travel techniques, peak ascents, and glissading. Much of the instruction occurs during field expeditions. Instruction will be both classroom and field-based. This course will meet in the classroom on Thursday 4/14 (7-9:30pm) and will be in the field for Saturday 4/16 & Sunday 4/17.
