Special Topic courses are offered on an experimental or temporary basis to explore topics that are not included in the established curriculum. A given topic may be offered under any special topic identity no more than three times. Special topics numbered 481 are primarily for upper-level undergraduate students.

An intensive, focused study involving independent research culminating in a written thesis approved by a thesis approved by a thesis director and two faculty readers/ committee members. May be taken more than once to a maximum of 6 credits. Prior approval thorugh advisor, faculty member, department chairperson, dean, and Provost's Office.

Under supervision of psychology department, selected students receive experience in application of psychological techniques. May be taken more than once to a maximum of 12sh.

Defines public health, and its origins and foundations as a field of inquiry. Covers majorapproaches to evaluating and analyzing human health patterns, and the function andstructure of the modern public health system in the United States. Explains the contextof modern public health systems, major approaches to analyzing and understandinghuman health patterns, and the structure of public health systems in the United States.

Introduces methodological and ethical research principles in public health. Includesstudy designs, data collection, human subjects protection, quantitative and qualitativeapproaches, program evaluation, and community-based participatory researchapplications. Applies relevant case studies to emphasize research methods used, such ashypothesis generation and testing, study design, data collection and analysis, searchingand critically evaluating research literature, identifying strengths and weaknesses ofresearch studies and drawing conclusions from research evidence.

Provides a capstone opportunity for students to analyze and apply public healththeories/models and research into their specific concentrations and experience the role of the public health professional. Consists of weekly one-hour seminar and weekly mentorship experience with public health professional 120-240 hours.

Expands upon the probabilistic concepts developed in MATH 214 to orient the student toward managerial decision making using quantitative methodologies. Topics covered include classical regression analysis, forecasting, Bayesian decision theory, linear programming, and simulation.

An introduction to the practice of data science with a broad set of data analytic skillsbased on building real analytic applications on a variety of real data, including bigdata, unstructured data and textual data. Skills include accessing and transferring data,applying various analytical frameworks, applying methods from machine learning anddata mining, conducting large-scale rigorous evaluations with business goals in mind,and visualizing data analytic results.Prerequsiites: QBUS 215
