A survey of the early history of rock music including its antecedents in Rhythm and Blues and Country. Particular emphasis will be on the music of the 1960's. The course will consist of two areas of study: a focus on analysis of musical characteristics and evolving styles, and a consideration of the sociopolitical impact rock music had on the second half of the 20 th century with particular emphasis on the role Rock as an important voice of the counterculture. Rock's interconnection with other arts such as film and poetry will also be emphasized.
