SOC 300: Chicago Communities and Cultures Seminar

Focus on the ethnic, religious, racial, economic and lifestyle diversity of Chicago's populations. You will visit the city's neighborhoods, be introduced to major political and economic institutions, and meet with community leaders. You will study how racism, economic displacement and violence impact the city and examine solutions surrounding these issues. Also emphasized are the role of artistic expression and the social dynamics of the city. You will get to know the broad range of art forms thriving in Chicago, including blues, jazz, museums, poetry, off -Loop art galleries, dance, fi lm and theater. (J-Term includes a placement.) Every term at the Urban Life Center in Chicago.

A course on the practical aspects of designing and managing a fundraising program for a nonprofi t organization. Students will participate in an actual fund raising campaign as part of the course requirements. Topics include: the role of an organizational strategic plan, annual fund tactics, essentials of planned giving, stewardship, ethics of donor relations, role of special events, material design, capital campaigns, the documentation of activities, relationships with the supervising board, the reasons diff erent categories of supporters have for deciding to support a particular appeal for assistance, and a brief examination of grant writing. Th is class has students working with non-profi t agencies in our area to address issues of concern to the community such as hunger, the needs of children, poverty, housing, community assessment, and the criminal justice system. Each student chooses a placement and connects his or her experiential learning with classroom learning. Students taking the class for four units of credit will complete an additional class assignment (such as a research paper or a more intensive service project). Spring semester.
