A fi eld study of the ecology and natural history of the Nebraska sandhills and adjacent Pine Ridge including origin and geology, wet lands, riparian areas, grasslands, national forest, rivers, lakes and streams, land use, museums and historical sites. Students will research and present an oral report. Th e course will include a seven-day fi eld-trip before the start of the fi rst semester and three 50-minute lectures a week during the fall semester.

Th is class will begin with an introduction to the basic concepts of inheritance, the inheritance of human traits and genetic diseases, and their diagnoses and possible treatments. We will investigate the impact that genetics has had on society, examining some misconceptions that have surrounded genetic traits and disorders, and some of the attempts which have occurred to control human heredity. Finally, we will consider some of the legal and bioethical issues raised by the Human Genome Project and by the rapid expansion of genetic technology. Fall, even-numbered years.

A basic laboratory science course designed to meet the needs of persons preparing to teach in elementary schools. Th e student is provided with a broad foundation in the basic physical sciences including such topics as matter, energy, light, heat, chemistry, and machines. Scientifi c method, applications of science, and technology will also be addressed. Students will gain skills in the practice of teaching and awareness of related policy issues. Students will be expected to take part in several fi eld trips and special workshops during the course, some which extend outside the usual meeting times. Th ree lectures and three one-hour laboratories per week. (Open only to majors in education.) Candidate must be admitted to the Teacher Education.
