CHM 464: Advanced Organic Chemistry

Th e structure and mechanisms of organic reactions will be studied. Kinetics and reaction mechanisms are included. Th e laboratory will include spectroscopic analysis of the products of multistep organic syntheses. Basic principles of macroscale synthesis, purifi cation, and analysis will be studied. Two lectures and one laboratory weekly. Prerequisites: CHM 263, 267. Fall, odd-numbered years.

A combined lecture and laboratory format will be used to give theoretical background and specialized procedures in instrumental methods not used in other courses of the Chemistry Department. Instrumental methods to be performed may include: voltammetry (CV, ASV), atomic absorption spectroscopy, fl uorescence, X-ray fl uorescence spectroscopy, and others as time permits. Included in the course are several days in the Chicago area to visit laboratories such as Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, and chemically- related industrial research and production facilities. Prerequisite: CHM 155 or permission of instructor. J-Term, odd-numbered years.
