S 2-5 cr. LAB 2-5 PREREQUISITE: ART 110, ART 111 or ART 203, or consent of instructor. -- Course will allow students to study at an off-campus location such as a foreign country under the direction of art faculty member. Includes preparatory meetings, several hours per day of discussion on site, and writing or creative project which assimilates direct experience and research.

LEC 3 PREREQUISITE: ART 202. -- This course is an exploration of the art and architecture of ancient Egypt and the Near East (Anatolia, Mesopotamia and Persia). Due to the nature of the surviving material, the emphasis will be on the ideas and attitudes of these civilizations about the relationship between humans and divinities, the cult of the ruler/king, and funerary cult and the afterlife.

LEC 3 PREREQUISITE: ART 203. -- This course will deal with the development of Gothic painting in Italy and its subsequent influence on the Northern tradition of painting in the Netherlands and Germany. Major masters include Giotto, Jan van Eyck, Bosch, Grunewald, Durer, and Bruegel.
