PREREQUISITE: Admission to the University Honors Program, and approval of Director. -- Directed undergraduate research/creative activity which may culminate in a research paper, journal article, or undergraduate thesis. Course will address responsible conduct of research.

F 3 cr. LEC 3 --During the semester, students will explore contempory issues related to microorganisms in the environment through a series of lectures and hands-on activities. Topics will include microbes in the enviromental, industrial, and medical settings. Examples include the beneficial role microbes play in treating waste water, making beer, wine, cheese and other food products as well as problems caused by microbes in medical infections, hot tubs, drinking water, and other industrial systems. Completing this course will advance a student's awareness and appreciation of scientific thought, critical thinking and improve communication skills.

SEM PREREQUISITE: First year students (less than 30 credits) only. -- This multi-disciplinary course, presented in seminar format, draws from the disciplines of psychology, sociology, history, and philosophy, and encourages students to explore issues critical to their academic goals and objectives. The course emphasizes verbal communication, critical thinking, intellectual development, and academic choices. Fulfills university seminar requirement of the core curriculum. This course may not be repeated.
