The Pharmacy Technician course provides an overview of the pharmacy technology field and provides students with the fundamental concepts and principles needed to achieve for success within the field as students are introduced to the concept of hospital pharmacy practice. The courses covered includes the Healthcare system, the profession of pharmacy, administrative aspects of pharmacy technology and the education and training of the technician. Students are provided with an introduction to basic mathematical tools used by pharmacy technicians, as well as general mathematics, basic algebra, systems of measurement and drug calculations. In addition, this course presents the sciences as they relate to pharmaceutical practice and discusses the different classifications of drugs and the impact that these different classifications have on the different body systems. Students are taught how to provide oversight and management of hospital onsite and offsite compounding facilities in order to maintain and achieve adherence to all regulatory requirements for sterile and non-sterile compounding. Lastly, the course provides an introduction to the legal system as it pertains to the Pharmaceutical field. This course prepares students to take the national certification examination administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

PTCB's exam determines whether individuals have mastered the knowledge and skills necessary to practice as a pharmacy technician. Pharmacy Technicians who want to work more effectively with pharmacists to offer better patient care and service take the PTCE to become nationally certified. Benefits of PTCB certification include an increase of job promotion opportunities, recognition within the pharmacy technicians demonstrate their qualifications and the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to function as a pharmacy technician through the examinations.
