3 credits For thousands of years humans have depended on various stone tools used to cut, carve, shave and scrape to form other tool, make weapons, prepare food and clothing. In an effort to retrace methods used over thousands of years, student will learn through hands-on experience the basic techniques and resources used in lithic technology. Students will demonstrate how to quarry and 132 identify proper stones, spall flakes, use pressure and percussion flaking techniques. Students will also be exposed to natural materials, tools and supplies to create scrapers for hides, adz for wood cutting and carving chisels, punches, awls, needles, celts and burins. Student will choose the tools they wish to create, write a research paper about their tools and then create their tools.
