This course examines the music of Bahia, the center of Afro Brazilian culture. Located on Brazil's Northeast coast, Bahia was the focus of South America's slave trade. This history has left a dynamic legacy of music that survives to this day. Through in-class lectures and field trips to museums, musical performances, and other cultural activities, students will have first hand experience wit h Candombl e rituals , Capoeir a classes, samba dancing, and modern popular music within their social contexts. They will also acquire the tools of musical analysis so that they can examine specific musical repertories, in order to trace the musical development of these genres.Credits: 3 hours NOTE: This course fulfills the Aesthetic Mode of Inquiry - Arts and the Intercultural Interconnecting Perspective of the Liberal Studies Program.
