Emphasis is placed on the relationship of states and the national government in our federal system. Emphasis is also devoted to the discussion of popular participation in the democratic process, political parties and voting, public opinion and interest groups, legislative organization and functions, executive branch structure and functioning, and state court organization and operations. Time is especially devoted to political institutions at the county and municipal levels of government, as this is the level of political activity most of our citizens and students come into contact with most frequently. Three lecture hours per week.
