This course explores and applies the patterns of knowing in nursing to representative alterations in physiologic function common throughout the lifespan. Using a holistic perspective, selected major health problems, their pathophysiology, and nursing and medical treatment are discussed. Units are organized around body systems. Theory, laboratory and clinical components emphasize care of the acutely ill client. Prerequisites: NURS 3200, 3300.

This course explores the patterns of knowing in nursing as applied to the family. The theoretical base facilitates empiric, aesthetic, ethical, and personal ways of knowing. Functional health patterns are applied to the family. Theory, clinical, and lab components focus on enhancing skills in the development of therapeutic relationships and nursing care of the family as client. Prerequisites: NURS 3200, 3300.

This course has theory, seminar and clinical components that provide a bridge to baccalaureate nursing education for experienced registered nurses. You are introduced to the theoretical basis of baccalaureate nursing practice. Using the patterns of knowing in nursing, you will explore family theory, wellness, therapeutic relationships, and concepts in teaching, learning, and health promotion. Theory-based practice, critical and reflective thinking, ethics, research, leadership, therapeutic communication, holism, cultural diversity, professional nursing roles and caring are emphasized. Theory and seminar course components are designed to enable you to understand (a) human experience as a focus of nursing, (b) a philosophy of nursing oriented to holism and wellness and (c) concepts and processes pivotal to professional nursing practice. Clinical course components focus on developing interpersonal relationship skills and providing nursing care to families. The importance of self-awareness and caring are integrated throughout all learning experiences. Prerequisite: Acceptance to R.N. to baccalaureate (WEC) section of the nursing major.

This course applies the patterns of knowing in nursing to complex clients in an acute care setting. The theoretical base facilitates empirical, aesthetic, ethical, and personal ways of knowing. The focus is on decision making and intervention in complex situations and stresses greater depth in therapeutic nurse-client relationships. Prerequisites: NURS 3280, 3400, 3500. Corequisite: NURS 4100.

Theory, laboratory, and clinical components focus on enhancing critical thinking skills with complex families who can benefit from nursing interventions that promote family strengths and resilience. Prerequisites: NURS 3280, 3400, 3500. Corequisite: NURS 4000.

You will focus on developing an understanding of and proficiency in mindful practice. Course work and clinical experiences focus on enhancing critical thinking skills that promote family strengths and resilience. Family nursing interventions emphasize the responsive use of self in therapeutic relationships with families. You will also identify connections between policy development and professional nursing practice. Theory, seminar and clinical components are included. Prerequisite: NURS 3900.

This course explores the nursing profession as one of many systems within the healthcare system and the role of the nurse as leader/manager within that complex system. The course introduces three major components: population-based nursing practice at the systems and community level; evidenced-based practice and empirical knowing; and leadership management in the care of complex clients. Theory, seminar, lab and clinical components are included. Prerequisites: NURS 4000, 4100 (Day students); NURS 4150 (WEC students).

Functional health patterns are applied in the provision of nursing care in homecare, hospice, community health, and mental health settings. Critical thinking in complex situations and refinement of therapeutic nurse-client relationships are emphasized. Theory and clinical components are included. Prerequisites: NURS 3600, 3700.

Structured out-of-class learning experience that takes place on- or off-campus and includes a substantial work component. An internship involves you in a particular profession in an exploratory way to test career interests and potential. To initiate an internship experience, you must meet with the internship coordinator in the Career Development Office. Prerequisites: Faculty sponsorship and approval by department chair.
