    Structured out-of-class learning experience that takes place on or off campus and includes a substantial work component. An internship involves you in a particular profession in an exploratory way to test career interests and potential. To initiate an internship experience, you must meet with the internship coordinator in the Career Development Office. Prerequisites: Faculty sponsorship and approval by department chair.

    Directed study is provided for students whose unusual circumstances prohibit taking a regularly scheduled course but who need the material of that course to satisfy a requirement. Availability of this faculty-directed learning experience depends on faculty time and may be limited in any given term and restricted to certain courses. Prerequisites: Faculty, department chair and dean approval.

    This course is an introduction to the resources and opportunities available to artists and designers to aid in their development as working professionals. Topics include portfolio preparation, resume writing, non-profit resources, exhibition opportunities, graduate studies and other strategies for making a living as an artist or designer. Course content takes the form of lectures, demonstrations, discussions and student presentations. Visiting artists and lecturers acquaint students with a range of challenges and opportunities faced by artists and designers working in several disciplines. You are required to critically examine your own work and the work of other students in order to clarify career goals and identify potential opportunities. Offered winter semester. Prerequisites: Successful completion of Portfolio Review II and signature of department chair.

    Preparation and exhibition of graduating studio art majors' artwork in the Catherine G. Murphy Gallery. Represents culmination of major study for studio art and visual arts education majors. You must complete the Senior Exhibition within four years of finishing the other requirements for the studio art major. Offered winter semester only. Prerequisites: Successful completion of Portfolio Review II and signature of department chair.

    An introduction to the history of Western art from prehistoric times through the Middle Ages. This course surveys the arts of Egypt, the Near East, the Classical Greek and Roman world and Europe, from about 2000 B.C. to about 1400 A.D. It examines works of sculpture, architecture, wall and vase painting, mosaic, manuscript illumination and other media, and analyzes them in their artistic, historical and social contexts. Offered in the department or through ACTC.

    An introduction to the history of Western art from the Renaissance through the modern period in Europe and America. The course surveys the artists and art movements that are generally agreed to be crucial in Western art and examines how historical background, patronage, religion, personality and gender influence artistic output. The course will cover the basics of art analysis and methods of art history. Offered every semester.

    This course examines the major styles, movements and figures of 20th century art in Europe and America within their social, historical and cultural contexts. It explores the Modernist tradition beginning with the late 19th century, Fauvism, Cubism, Surrealism, Dadaism, etc., and the critique of Modernism formulated by the recent Post-Modern tendencies. The course will trace a variety of issues central to the developments of art in the 20th century and examine how gender, class, race and ethnicity influence artistic output. Writing intensive, required course for studio art, visual art education and art history majors. Offered annually.

    This course examines art in the United States from 1945 to the present. It analyzes major artists and art movements that shape the character of contemporary art within sociopolitical and cultural contexts. Includes exploration of Post-Modernism and the most current directions in visual arts. Offered in alternate years.

    An exploration of art in Latin America beginning with its pre-Columbian roots through the 20th century. The first half of the course examines the art of ancient civilizations of the Inca, Olmec, Maya and Aztec and the historical and political context in which they developed. The second half explores the modern developments in art in various Latin American countries, covering artists such as Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Maria Izquierdo, Rufino Tamayo, Torres-Garcia, Xul Solar and others. Offered in alternate years.
