Students study basic principles and processes of the printing industry with an emphasis on offset lithography. This is a survey course that examines the history of print, the major printing processes, while breaking down the production stages from concept to bindery operations. Projects and exercises will address the various production stages of the industry. Throughout the semester we will discuss the on-going evolution and application of conventional production techniques into the electronic/computerized arena. In short, this is a class about the nuts and bolts of printed media. Be warned: Language of instructor is representative of industry scenarios at times. (3 hrs lec)

Students refine their skills with the process of offset lithography. Projects provide opportunities to apply their skills and understanding of image concept and design, image assembly, film conversion (including both process camera and imagesetter output), platemaking, duplicator presswork, and bindery operations. (2 hrs lec, 2 hrs lab)

A continuation of ART 1610. Allows concentration in the following areas: art and copy preparation, process camera, image assembly, offset duplicator presswork, and bindery. Course stresses the production of quality materials. Prerequisite: ART 1610 and ART 1720. (2 hrs lec, 4 hrs arranged lab)

Students acquire essential information and experience to employ electronic digital imaging processes for print-based workflows. Skills learned include digital output for various print sources, scanning and using scanning software, and post-scan image editing using image editing software (Adobe Photoshop) for the creation of line, halftone, and color separated images in the printed medium. Prerequisite: ART 1510. (3 hrs lec)

This course is designed to develop computer literacy by way of acquainting the student to the Macintosh computer, its operating system, and a number of applications. It will include a strong component of digital media as it relates to portfolio development, publicity, and promotional purposes with Art and Graphic Design majors in mind. The content will prepare students for college assignments using the Macintosh computer.(3 hrs lec)

Students come to understand the impact of the microcomputer on the publishing industry. Students will use Adobe InDesign, Photoshop (scanning and file touch up), and a variety of peripherals including color scanners, color printers, and imagesetters. Projects enable students to explore various capabilities and reinforce concepts learned in lecture and demonstrations. (2 hrs lec/4 hrs lab)

Students gain first-hand experience with current applications, techniques, and equipment used in the generation of type and images in the area of electronic publishing. Additional skill and knowledge is gained regarding QuarkXPress, font installation and management, building a type library, typography, mark-up, methods to speed up design and productions work, preflighting for service bureaus, and imagesetting to film. Prerequisite: ART 1510 and ART 1800. (3 hrs lec)

A continuation and expansion of ART 1005. Emphasis placed on continued development of strength in observational skills and visual thinking abilities. Stress placed on expanded approaches to drawing through incorporation of design concepts, exploration of a broad range of ideas, and experimentation with a variety of media. Prerequisite: ART 1005.
