The seminar involves both a definition of human rights as well as enforcement procedures for the implementation of human rights. The historical and philosophical bases of human rights are examined starting with the works of various thinkers from the diverse schools, particularly natural law, positivism, Marxism and the social logical school. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the later international covenants are looked at in terms of the influences of the various schools. The seminar addresses the question of whether there is agreement as to fundamental human rights. Recent developments and tensions in the field of human rights particularly since the increase membership of counties from the third world and socialist block countries are investigated. This is highlighted by focusing on the later two covenants of the United Nations, particularly the Covenant on Social, Economic and Cultural Rights, which enlarges the scope of human rights to include welfare, cultural, and economic rights. Finally, the seminar focuses on the contribution of international and non-governmental organizations in the protection and implementation of human rights. 2. 000 Credit Hours 2. 000 Lecture hours Levels: Graduate Business, Master of Laws, Law Schedule Types: Seminar Chicago- Kent College of Law College Law Department

This seminar will focus on the topic of burdens of proof and presumptions. These twin ideas are of considerable practical and theoretical importance but tend to get only passing treatment in other courses, including basic Evidence courses. We will examine them in some depth, looking at the factors that determine upon whom a given burden of proof is placed, what it takes to satisfy that burden, and when the burden can be shifted to another party. We will consider both civil and criminal litigation. 2. 000 Credit Hours 2. 000 Lecture hours Levels: Graduate Business, Master of Laws, Law Schedule Types: Seminar Chicago- Kent College of Law College Law Department
