A lawyer's time is increasingly consumed by the study of legislative materials, even more then the study of common law precedents. Lawyers must read and interpret statues in the context of litigation or when giving an opinion to a client. Moreover, lawyers have become actors in the legislative process through lobbying, representing clients before committees, and drafting legislation (or legislative history). The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the legislative process and different theories of statutory interpretation. Course reading includes cases, statutes, and some secondary sources. The course examines the contributions made by legal scholars as well as scholars in other disciplines (literary criticism and interpretation, critical legal studies, and public choice theory) and how these theories should or do affect the way in which courts interpret statues. 3. 000 Credit Hours 3. 000 Lecture hours Levels: Graduate Business, Master of Laws, Law Schedule Types: Lecture Chicago- Kent College of Law College Law Department
