The opportunity to protect one's unique and valuable ideas is a core tenet of the global economic system and is embodied in the laws of intellectual property. Disciplines such as design and engineering that are involved in the development of new ideas must actively pursue this protection. This course introduces the principles and methods for securing intellectual property rights. Topics covered include utility and design patents, trademark, copyright, and trade dress. Emphasis is placed on the ability to articulate novelty, the appropriate process of securing intellectual property, and common ways intellectual property can be valued. 1. 500 Credit Hours 3. 000 Lecture hours Levels: Graduate Doctoral, Graduate Business, Graduate Schedule Types: Lecture Institute of Design College Institute of Design Department

Involves students in reading and discussing the role of design in the context of case studies. Particular attention will be paid to the relationship between design and other forces influencing the goals of the organization. Case studies may relate to either design planning of human-centered design. 1. 500 Credit Hours 3. 000 Lecture hours Levels: Graduate Doctoral, Graduate Business, Graduate Schedule Types: Lecture Institute of Design College Institute of Design Department

Investigates principles and methods for exploring the behavior of systems. System dynamics techniques are used to model design concepts with the goal of revealing complex, noninceptive relationships. Important topics include general systems theory, modeling, causality and formalisms. 1. 500 Credit Hours 3. 000 Lecture hours Levels: Graduate Doctoral, Graduate Business, Graduate Schedule Types: Lecture Institute of Design College Institute of Design Department

A general thematic introduction to the history of design with topics chosen to illustrate how the processes of shaping and communicating have changed through history. The purpose is to understand design in terms of generic models, the nature of which can be discerned across different cultures. A broad range of examples will be explored and their relevance to models of contemporary practice will be discussed. 1. 500 Credit Hours 3. 000 Lecture hours Levels: Graduate Doctoral, Graduate Business, Graduate Schedule Types: Lecture Institute of Design College Institute of Design Department

This course examines design in the United States since World War II, as a platform for developing skills in research and communication. It consists of two elements: The first is an examination of the extent to which the generic models established in ID 574 manifest themselves in the United States. Emphasis will be placed on the evolution of design methodology and planning. The second is short research exercise into a topic covered by the course with presentation to publication standards. 1. 500 Credit Hours 3. 000 Lecture hours Levels: Graduate Doctoral, Graduate Business, Graduate Schedule Types: Lecture Institute of Design College Institute of Design Department

The form of a product is a result of resolving technical conditions, organizing the product for use, and a means for communicating. In this course students examine what technical and social dimensions impact product form and conversely, how product form can be controlled by the designer to improve the product's form and corporate identity; visual trends, new materials, semantics, product architecture, ergonomics, specific industries and others. 1. 500 Credit Hours 3. 000 Lecture hours Levels: Graduate Doctoral, Graduate Business, Graduate Schedule Types: Lecture Institute of Design College Institute of Design Department
