Quantitative Literacy Level 1 or ALG 051 and MT 050 - This course focuses on strengthening the quantitative skills the student needs to be an effective teacher of mathematics as a communication tool. She uses data describing current issues in society to practice interpreting, evaluating, and presenting information. The course covers three major content areas - representing data, predicting data, and measurement - the latter with an emphasis on geometric concepts. In addition to developing a better understanding of mathematical content, the student practices and develops strategies for taking objective tests specific to the education field.

- This course reviews writing strategies and offers practice with composing processes as required for the graduate licensure student. It focuses primarily on the types of writing needed by new teachers in their work settings and includes both impromptu and planned writing tasks. Grammar concepts are integrated into each lesson. The student uses a handbook as a resource for grammar; drafting, composing, and revising processes; doing research; and citing sources. The course is conducted as a workshop with the student doing, and sometimes finishing, written assignments during class time.
