Prereq. Completion of all 200-level courses in the major - Through an interdisciplinary study of cross-cultural communication, behavioral and social sciences, and/or management theories, the student researches and reviews Latin America. She studies historical and contemporary contexts for family, social, organizational, and political structures, and she investigates the role of cultural values, fine arts, and science, such as language development and ecological and ethical understanding. The course includes an examination of specific indigenous populations, cultural practices, and various sociopolitical forces, including but not limited to for-profit, nonprofit, and nongovernmental organizations. The student expands her current worldview and learns to interact within a global society. The course consists of seven class study sessions and a required travel component. Countries of focus may include Paraguay, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, or other Latin American nations.

Prereq. MGT 201 - This course introduces the student to governmental and not-for-profit (NFP) accounting. This area of accounting is highly specialized and shares some of the basic principles of financial accounting but also differs in a number of key areas. The student studies the financial reporting principles of governmental and NFP accounting, including funds and account groups. She also participates in a major course project in which she develops a detailed evaluation of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for a major governmental entity. Emphasis is also placed on accounting and reporting principles for specialized industries such as education and health care.

Prereq. CLD 101 or SSC 101 - This course introduces the student to the economics and politics of local and regional government decision making. She compares different structures of governance and planning in order to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each. For example, communities include many different economic, cultural, and political interest groups. How well do various types of local and regional government address their diverse needs? The student examines case studies of local political issues and investigates issues in her own community.

CLD/SOC 220 or MGT 221 or PCM 230; Integrated Communication Level 3 - In this course the student synthesizes contemporary literature on leadership and formulates her own definition and profile of effective leadership in various contexts. She takes on the formal leadership function of a group with specific tasks, accomplishes objectives effectively, and commits to an ongoing program of leadership selfdevelopment.

Prereq. Integrated Communication Level 3 - As a staff member of the Alverno College student newspaper, Alpha, the student learns news-gathering techniques, journalistic styles, and editing. She learns various formats used in newswriting - leads, news stories, feature stories, interviews, and editorials. She may also practice page layout and design, incorporating graphics, illustrations, and headlines to accompany text.

Prereq. One Integrated Communication Level 4 - The student learns writing and editing skills applicable to technical information. Projects include procedure manuals, process papers, feasibility reports, business proposals, annual reports, and product literature.

Prereq. One Integrated Communication Level 4 - The student explores the history, principles, and theories of philanthropy. Analyzing the values and goals of a nonprofit client, she develops practical skills and identifies resource strategies in such areas as donor relations, volunteer coordination, database management, special-events planning, and grant writing. Case studies and guest speakers help acquaint the student with the variety of approaches used in different organizations, and she completes a semesterlong research and grant-writing project as an assessment. In the process, she also examines her own personal and professional commitments and contributions.

Prereq. One Integrated Communication Level 4 - The course includes extensive coverage of professionalspeaking strategies in such areas as business reporting, training and development, and formal speechwriting. The student is encouraged to speak from her own studies, integrating professional communication or management content with her analytic, valuing, and communication skills.

Prereq. One Integrated Communication Level 4 - This course assists the student to develop her understanding of different value systems and communication patterns among various cultural groups. Probing her own experience, viewing films, reading, and interacting with guest speakers, she establishes a workable framework for guiding interaction within intercultural settings.
