CH 234: Analytical Chemistry/ Quantitative Analysis
4.00 Credits
Alverno College
Prereq. MT 123 and, beginning fall 2010, CH 113 - The student studies the basic concepts of stoichiometry and equilibrium, focusing mainly on how these apply to solubility and acid/base chemistry. She also practices applying the ideas of accuracy and precision in the evaluation of data. In the laboratory, the student practices basic quantitative measurement technique in the context of gravimetric, titrimetric, and colorimetric analysis. She also designs and carries out an independent investigation in which she applies one of these techniques to the analysis of a real-life sample of her choice.

CH 260: Chemistry of Inorganic Materials
4.00 Credits
Alverno College
Prereq. ALG 051 and, beginning fall 2009, CH 113 - The student investigates relationships between the properties of elements and their position on the Periodic Table. She uses the oxidation-reduction model and models for various types of chemical bonds as she predicts and explains properties of inorganic materials. In the laboratory, she designs and carries out an investigation of an oxidationreduction reaction such as corrosion or bleaching.

CH 322: Organic Chemistry 2
4.00 Credits
Alverno College
Prereq. CH 221; CH 234 - The student applies the structure-property framework in the analysis of chemical transformation. She uses reaction mechanisms and retrosynthetic analysis in designing multistep syntheses. In the laboratory, she focuses on the development of professional, ethical behavior by working both collaboratively and independently on a number of inves- tigations. The student works independently on a synthesis project of her own choosing, taking responsibility for all aspects of the project. She modifies published procedures for the synthesis of organic molecules, designs computational experiments to support her wet-chemistry work, and verifies product structures using spectroscopic methods.

CH 414: External Assessment in Chemistry
0.00 Credits
Alverno College
This assessment offers students with a major or a support area in chemistry the opportunity to demonstrate how they effectively use and communicate chemical information. The student assembles a portfolio of her communications, including laboratory notebooks, written reports and papers, videotapes of speeches, and abstracts. She describes the research strategies she employed in her portfolio work. She assesses her portfolio, describing her own strengths and weaknesses.

4.00 Credits
Alverno College
Prereq. CH 234; MT 253; PH 232 - The student uses models and equations to predict the behavior of chemical systems and learns how the models and equations were developed from experimental data and the principles of chemistry, physics, and mathematics. She works relatively independently on laboratory projects related to physical chemistry and her career goals. The emphasis is on gases and thermodynamics.
