Science is not an unchanging subject. Many "facts" of science have been disproved, while otherinsights have remained unchanged. This course will focus on the scientific achievements of the past and the experiments that have led us to our current understanding. We will look at major themes in the fields of astronomy (from a geocentric to a heliocentric cosmology), physics (the science of mechanics: ancient and modern), chemistry (the atom: from hypothesis to reality), and biology (the discovery of the gene). This course is designed to introduce students to the basic concepts of modern geographic information systems (GIS). The class will consist of lectures, discussions, readings, demonstrations, and hands-on training exercises using ESRI's GIS software. This will give students experience in defining spatial problems and solutions, organizing and locating geographic data, manipulating data for display, and map creation and use of a desktop GIS. Students will be expected to use what they have learned to develop a final GIS project. Lab fee $40. Spring, odd years.
