(PLAB1023–Phlebotomy) Skill development in the performance of a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and universal precautions. Includes vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood culture, and specimen collection on adults, children, and infants. Emphasis on infection prevention, proper patient identification, labeling of specimens and quality assurance, specimen handling, processing, and accessioning. Topics include professionalism, ethics, and medical terminology. No uniform required. (GED or high school diploma required). (32 hrs.) Supplies: Textbook is required.

(PLAB1062–Clinical—Phlebotomy/Phlebotomist) A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. Upon successful completion of this program, the student will be eligible to take the phlebotomist certification examination offered by ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists). This course requires a very flexible schedule as you will be assigned your clinical schedule after you have gone to class, not before. Those with fulltime jobs and full-time students are not encouraged to take this course because of the clinical assignment. (120 hrs.) Students enrolled in the Phlebotomy Certification program are required to fulfill a specified number of clinical hours. Clinicals may be assigned to students any time during the day including early morning or late afternoon hours. Students must have flexibility in their schedules in order to fulfill all of their clinical requirements. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from clinicals which may, on occasion, be in the rurual areas surrounding Tyler. Prerequisite: Completion of Basic Immunizations required. GED or high school diploma required. Completion of PLAB 1023 prior to first start date of course. Supplies: Scrubs/Lab Coat and Textbook required. Schedule for Phlebotomy Certification Must attend first class! 1st & 2nd week—MTR, Lecture classes, 1–5 p.m. Last 6 weeks—20 hours per week (120 total clinical hours) of clinical at facility (schedule not given until class starts) in addition to one lecture class per week from 1–5 p.m., which be Tuesday or Thursday depending on clinical schedule. Students are responsible for transportation to and from the clinical site which may be in surrounding areas.
