A course for the non-science major designed to introduce the student to elements of weather, meteorology, and weather forecasting with a non-mathematical approach. Topics include radiation and heating of the atmosphere, forces and wind, the general circulation, moisture and stability, fronts and cyclones. The student is introduced to basic forecast methods utilizing charts, data, radar, and satellite imagery. Contemporary topics of global warming, ozone depletion, air pollution, and El Niño are also addressed. Class hrs. 3; Lab hrs. 2. Not offered every semester.

An introduction to the fundamentals of astronomy for the non-science major. The course examines how we have learned about the structure and organization of the universe through observation and experimentation. Emphasis is placed on stars, galaxies and cosmology. Other topics include appearance and motions of the sun, moon, and stars, the nature of light and gravity, and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. The course includes a planetarium activity, computer simulations and hands-on investigations. Class hrs. 3; Lab hrs. 2.

A consideration of conventional and alternative energy sources and the societal issues posed by current energy use patterns and future energy needs. Emphasis is placed on several alternative technologies, public policy issues, and the political decision-making process. Specific areas covered are: conventional fossil fuels, thermal solar energy, photovoltaic electricity, windpower, hydropower, biomass conversion, fission, fusion, and breeder reactors. Economic feasibility and environmental impacts are examined. Class hrs. 3. No lab. Offered fall and spring semesters.

Physical systems and landforms of the earth are studied. Climate, weather, geomorphology, plate tectonics and earth processes, and map reading are covered. A comparative study is made of the integrated use of resources and land, including climactic borders. Class hrs. 3; Lab hrs. 2.

The concepts of health and the role of the practical nurse in the health care system form the basis of this course. Client individuality with a sensitivity to family, community and cultural needs is emphasized. The nursing process, legal-ethical issues, infection control, normal nutrition, communication skills, and medication administration are introduced. Basic nursing skills are taught in the lab. Focuses on the clinical application of fundamental nursing skills. Clinical ends mid-semester. Class hrs. 4, Lab hrs. 2, Clinical hrs. 14. Enrollment limited to students matriculated in the PNA curriculum. Prerequisite: Basic Anatomy & Physiology or Anatomy & Physiology I & II and Composition & Literature I. Offered fall semester.

This course introduces human physical, emotional, and social development throughout the life cycle, concentrating on family and cultural needs during pregnancy and birth. A relationship is drawn between problems in the normal developmental stages and subsequent psychological difficulties. Therapeutic communication skills are emphasized, and the use of the computer is introduced. Focuses on the clinical application of principles of mental health and familycentered maternity nursing. Clinical begins mid-semester. May be taken for Honors. Class hrs. 4; Lab hrs. 2; Clinical hrs. 14. Pre- or Corequisite: PNA 101 Nursing I. Offered fall semester.
